As you know, Dave Shaferly spent a month in Haiti where he helped arrange for OMS medical teams in Port-au-Prince, as well as repair generators, and help OMS personnel in Cap Haitien. He says pictures don’t begin to tell the story of the devastation of the earthquake. Haiti still needs a lot of prayer.
The reports of the many thrilling things God is doing in the aftermath of the earthquake are awesome: 40,000+ conversions (just imagine!)… many testimonies of God’s often miraculous deliverances… huge crowds gathered in towns throughout the nation for prayer and fasting, hands swaying in the air, singing, praying, repenting of all kinds of sins, calling out to God for forgiveness and mercy… an estimated million people in front of the National Palace… 50,000 weaving through the streets of Cap Haitien bearing signs proclaiming “Jesus is the King of my Life, “ or “Christ for Haiti, Haiti for Christ…” calls for a “Christian leader”, someone who will lead Haiti in a “new direction…” Elections are scheduled for this fall. Pray!
The medical and evangelism teams OMS rotated in and out of Port-au-Prince for three weeks resulted in over 500 conversions. PTL! Now, an Emmaus Biblical Seminary student is there to plant a church. 8 OMS missionaries and 16 Emmaus students helped him Easter weekend with evangelism, worship services and children’s programs. When Emmaus re-convened Feb. 17 several new students, displaced by the earthquake, took advantage of the special offer of free tuition. One of the young men whose father had died in a collapsed hotel, had left his mother and sister in Port-au-Prince, destitute and living in a tent. He himself had been badly injured when his house caved in; he would have died had not his grandfather’s pastor, an Emmaus graduate, given money to bring him to Cap Haitien for medical treatment. “Emmaus will teach you God’s word,” the pastor told him. Radio 4VEH, too, continues to serve the hurting Haitian community. Messages (“Come quickly, your mother is very sick”), music, meditations (“Rejoice in the Lord in all circumstances, then when troubles come our joy remains in Him”), encouragement (“4VEH is a blessing for Haitians around the globe”) are all integral to 4VEH ministry. April 10 the second annual “Radio 4VEH 10 K Race of Solidarity”, postponed because of the earthquake, was scheduled in Cap Haitien to support 4VEH’s 60th year of ministry. Nearly 200 runners signed up! Pray for the results of the race that it will have an impact on Haiti. Thank you so much for your prayers and contributions over the past few weeks. Haiti will need them for a long time to come. David and Marilyn Shaferly |
